Where the Hell is Hungaristan?

Somewhere in Eastern Europe, beyond Austria, lies the little-known country of Hungaristan. No, not Hungary - that's confined to Budapest, the allegedly modern, civilised city frequented by adventurous western tourists. No, I mean the bit beyond that, where all notions of civilisation and rational thinking are left behind. A dark and primitive place, inhabited by dark and primitive creatures, whose attitudes, morals, ethics and behaviour were left behind in the middle ages by the rest of the world.

How do we know of this grim place? Simple - we live there. In a place that appears on few maps, that is indicated by a single road sign, and is only visited by unfortunates so hopelessly lost they stand little chance of return to the 21st Century.
My wife and I came here about three years ago. Bought a house for less than the price of a decent laptop, renovated it and moved in, and we've been living pretty self-sufficient ever since. Why did we come here? My wife is ethnically Hungarian, and was brought up in Germany after her parents were deported during WWII. Her first language was Hungarian, and she'd been brought up with stories of the 'old country', so after the wall fell in 1989, coming to live here was a realistic option. But nothing could have prepared us for what we found.
